If left unchecked rising damp can result in both wet/dry rot, severely damaging your property.
Damp and failed damp proofing is by far, the most frequent problem encountered in the home. Each year, the average home in Sussex & Brighton copes with around 10,000 gallons of rain water, so it is no surprise that damp proofing can become a big problem for many.
Damp Problems
Although most damp problems are much less serious than they actually look, whatever the cause, rising damp is unhealthy, unsightly and can lead to timber decay and heat loss. Absorbed moisture can lead to wall dampness in conditions of high relative humidity.
What appears to be rising damp can be due to various factors – the failure of an existing damp proof course (dpc), bridging due to the raising of external ground or internal floor levels, or in older buildings, the complete absence of a damp proof course. Wall dampness may also be due to condensation or an incorrect.
Wet Rot Symptoms
Wet rot is easy to identify as the wood will be very damp, it could have cracked and will be dark and will shrink. Prod it with a sharp implement such as a screwdriver and the wood will probably crumble or will be very soft and pulpy.
Where any affected timber has lost its strength, removing the timber and replacing it with new timber treated against the potential germination of wet rot spores ensures the structural integrity of the building. Specialist wet rot treatment will be required to finish it off. This generally involves eradication through chemical spray and other wet rot treatments carried out by the team at GJP Floor Sanding Brighton
Rising Damp
Rising damp will spread quickly breaking down internal plaster and will ruin internal decorations. If left unchecked rising damp can result in both wet/dry rot, severely damaging your property. If you have a damp problem, we suggest that you contact GJP Flooring Brighton and ask for one of our qualified contractors to conduct a damp proofing survey.
Wet Rot
Wet rot treatment can usually be carried out by removing the moisture source and drying out the surrounding timbers thus preventing further spread.
Wet Rot, whilst typically not as difficult to eradicate as Dry Rot, can nevertheless cause severe damage within your property if allowed to go unchecked and is often a common cause of structural faults.
Dry Rot
Dry rot is a serious problem and can compromise the structural integrity of your property. Dry rot is a living and growing fungus, which feeds off and destroys your floor timber.
Dampness combined with lack of ventilation provides the ideal conditions for fungal attack. The longer you leave it, the worse it will become. Correcting dry rot requires a specialist dry rot treatment.
Dry Rot Symptoms
Symptoms to look out for include timbers that are brown in colour with dry and brittle cuboidal features that are easily broken or crumble in your hand, fine greyish strands developing from dry rot spores that spread and grow transporting moisture from damp areas allowing Mycelium growth, which often looks like silky white sheets or cotton wool-like-white cushions varying in colour from grey to pure white.
